Flat Rock Playhouse

The Flat Rock Playhouse NC got its start more than 70 years ago in 1937, when a group of struggling actors began to entertain the local community and tourists who visited the area for vacations. The group was led by Robroy Farquhar, and they called themselves the Vagabond Players using a 150 year old grist mill that they converted into a playhouse as the venue for their performances. Performing at nearby Highland Lake, the troupe had a successful summer season just before WWII began.

After the devastation of the war, the Vagabond Players reunited and began using a nearby playhouse at Lake Summit. The Lake Summit Playhouse became very popular in the post war years; so popular that the Vagabond Players began looking for a larger venue. In 1952, the players' dreams of making their own playhouse became a reality when they purchased the 8 acre lot in the historic Western NC village of Flat Rock NC that became the home of the Flat Rock Playhouse. In 1961 the troupe’s newly constructed playhouse in Flat Rock became officially designated as the State Theatre of North Carolina. What began as a small group of entertainers in the Blue Ridge Mountains has evolved into a full production operation which includes a ten show professional series, a summer and fall college apprenticeship and internship program, and performance and cabaret shows by the YouTheatre; the Flat Rock Playhouse NC welcomes more than 90,000 patrons into its doors each year.

During the eight month long show season at the Flat Rock Playhouse North Carolina, the troupe performs all of your favorites including Broadway plays, musicals, comedies, dramas and tons of theatre for young audiences. The Flat Rock Playhouse NC is a wonderful place to enjoy a show, and throughout the year they regularly feature workshops to help up and coming performers.
